Domestic Violence Attorney FAQ
Serving Detroit, Ann Arbor and all of Michigan
Will a family court acknowledge the effects of domestic violence in my divorce proceedings, or do the 'no fault' rules prohibit that?
In cases in which one party in a marriage has suffered from domestic violence at the hands of the other party, Michigan courts allow the victim to file a separate domestic violence complaint, which will be taken into account by the court when issuing orders in the divorce.
What legal options are available to protect me from a violent spouse or former spouse?
Depending on the individual case, the court may take action to prevent the offender from contacting you, or he or she may be incarcerated. Because domestic violence cases are frequently difficult to prove, it is especially important that you contact a competent, seasoned domestic violence attorney as soon as possible to represent your case and fight for a solution that gives you the long-term safety and security you and your family need.
